Know The Novel: Introducing Into My Life

Hello, everyone! Today, I’m joining Christine Smith and many others for her three-month long Know The Novel link-up for NaNoWriMo!

(BUT you can still do it even if you’re not doing NaNo!)

For October, it’s all about introduction! So, without further ado, allow me to introduce Into My Life!

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?

It all started in 2015…I tend to churn up alternate universes for my stories every now and then, and it may have been that I was thinking of one for my characters Henry & Lizzie when this idea popped into mind. So I wrote it down and then promptly forgot about it for almost two years.

The original idea was this: A woman’s husband of one year and former boyfriend have to work together to solve her ‘murder’.Or her current boyfriend and former boyfriend. Or her fiancé and former boyfriend.

2. Share a blurb!

When his ex-girlfriend, Ariel Shaw, goes missing, security guard Connor Matthews is immediately suspected by her husband Zach, despite evidence to the contrary.

Bored of looking for stolen bikes, newbie PI Kelly Hayes immediately jumps at the chance to find Ariel Shaw, who has been missing for a week.

As Kelly and her partner dig deeper and reveal their findings, Connor soon realizes he’ll be facing the past he never wanted to remember.

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects about the setting?

Originally, it took place in Chicago, Illinois. Now it takes place somewhere in Western Washington, around the Puget Sound area. (NOT Seattle because it’s overused!) I’m leaning towards Tacoma, but there’s also Silverdale, Bremerton, and Poulsbo…decisions, decisions.

Some of my favorite aspects? The mountains, especially when they’re snow-capped. Also the evergreen forests. And the pops of orange, gold, and red here and there among the green when fall shows up. THE RAIN AND THE SMELL OF EARTH AFTER IT.

(Truthfully, I may be a little biased since I live here, but whatever. xD)

4. Tell us about your protagonist(s).

Connor Matthews was placed into foster care when he was 5, after his mom could no longer care for him. When he left (more like escaped) foster care, he hitchhiked to Washington and took refuge with a pastor and his wife. He had odd jobs here and there until he landed his current job as a security guard for a private (fictional) company.

Kelly Hayes lost her parents when she was 14, and went to live with her maternal grandparents in Washington when her older siblings were unwilling to do so. Once she graduated high school, she set her mind on becoming a private investigator and did, partnering with an older, more seasoned PI who acts as her big brother figure.

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?

Unsavory folks from Connor’s past.

6. What excites you the most about this novel?

Getting to finally write the very beginnings of Connor & Kelly’s relationship.

7. Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

Into My Life is the first of 5 books in the Matthews Family series! Technically, there’s 6 books in the series because there’s a prequel about Connor’s parents.

8. Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

Plotting! And I’ve also done some plantsing, ’cause I’ve written a few scenes out.

9. Name a few things that makes this story unique.

I’m not entirely sure? Maybe it’s because the protagonists don’t fall in love yet, maybe it’s because the forefront plot is the relationship between the characters and the back-burner plot is the event that causes the suspense. Unlike most suspense novels where it’s the other way around.

10. Share a fun “extra” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

Here’s the storyboard and playlist from Pinterest!

So, there’s the intro for Into My Life! Now, to sit and wait for November to arrive…

  1. Ooooh, this sounds like a blast! I LOVE the initial idea of a woman’s ex-boyfriend and husband having to work together. That is hilarious and brilliant. XD And YAY for character-centered plots. Always great. And these sound like delightful characters to work with. Love it all!

Thank you for joining the linkup! This was so great getting to know more about your novel. I hope the writing goes wonderfully!

    1. Haha, right??! I have to say, these characters are probably my favorites. (They’re so soft and precious and they need to be wrapped in warm fuzzy blankies and given hot chocolate heaped with whipped cream and marshmallows)

You’re welcome! I can’t wait for the next part! Or NaNo, lol!
