Know The Novel: Within Into My Life

Yay, time for Part Two of Christine Smith’s Know The Novel linkup! First, a mini-update: I decided to be crazy and write two versions during NaNo. Not 50k each, but combined. I’m planning on V1 being maybe 35-40k, and then V2 is the rest.

Now, onto the linkup stuff.

1. How’s the writing going overall?

Currently, as of this morning, V1 is sitting at 13,336 words and V2 is still sitting at 1,270 words. So in total – 14,606.

It’s been kinda slow, since I didn’t finish my story map and am thus pantsing it from the First Plot Point on.

*screech*

2. What’s been the most fun aspect about writing this novel so far?

Hands down, Connor & Kelly’s interactions. THEY ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF THIS BOOK. LITERALLY. THE WRITING WAS IN A SLUMP UNTIL I INTRODUCED THEM TO EACH OTHER.

TWICE.

(It’s like I told a writing friend – it’s almost like the entire series is based in their relationship and without, the series just…falls apart)

3. What do you think of your characters at this point? Who’s your favorite to write about?

I have loved these characters (except for the bad guys) ever since I first imagined them, but Connor & Kelly are my favorites to write about so far.

4. Has your novel surprised you in any way?

*shrug* I know these characters inside and out, and have placed them in multiple situations to develop and round them
out (some of which are not canon because I would never publish that much pain), so…I guess not really?

5. Have you come across any problem areas?

Feeling like this story is starting to not match the characters anymore and that this series is starting out the wrong way now. It’s become really focused on familial themes and I think the original plan I had for the first three books is slowly going out the window. That’s probably it.

6. What’s been your biggest victory with writing this novel at this point?

Just getting it written.

7. If you were transported into your novel and became any one of the characters, which one do you think you’d be? Would you take any different actions than they have?

I would probably be Kelly. And admittedly, I probably wouldn’t mind my friends playing matchmaker. *song from Fiddler on The Roof starts playing in head*

8. Give us the first sentence or paragraph then 2 (or 3!) more favorite snippets!

Hartford, Connecticut, 1988 – Five-year-old Connor ran out of the darkened bathroom, leaving the faucet running behind him. Desperate to find a source of light, he neglected to spread his arms out to make sure he didn’t bump into any walls.

Outside the kitchen window, the afternoon sunshine lit the snow on Mt. Rainier looming in the distance.

He paused and stared at the nearly three-mile high mountain. Though he had already been living in Washington for the past five years, it never ceased to amaze him how something so beautiful could also be so dangerous.

Much like people, he thought. He blinked and shook his head before any more errant thoughts about the majority of his childhood could pop up.

“I will be so glad when the new bridge is finished,” Kelly said as she kicked the door shut behind her. She stopped and shook her head at the sight of her partner, who had deemed himself her surrogate brother, asleep in his chair, feet propped up in the desk.

If only he had a fedora, she thought. Then he’d look exactly like the stereotypical private investigator in movies and tv shows.

“Michaels?” she said.

He snorted, but didn’t wake up.

Kelly took a deep breath and shouted, “Alexander!”

His eyes shot open and he nearly fell out of his chair as he scrambled upright. “Wha-coming, Mom! What do you-” He noticed Kelly and scowled. “Oh, c’mon, Hayes! I was having a good dream!”

He snapped out of his thoughts to see Kelly and Joe looking at him. “What? Do I have something on my face?”

“Your freckles?” Kelly asked.

Connor snorted. “You noticed? ‘Cause they’re not that prominent.”

“I’m a private investigator, I’m supposed to observe.”

 “Touché.”

9. Share an interesting tidbit about the writing process so far! (For example: Have you made any hilarious typos? Derailed from your outline? Killed off a character? Changed projects entirely? Anything you want to share!)

Like I already mentioned in the tiny update, I decided to do two versions of IML.

(help)

10. Take us on a tour of what a normal writing day for this novel looks like. Where do you write? What time of day? Alone or with others? Is a lot of coffee (or some other drink) consumed? Do you light candles? Play music? Get distracted by social media (*cough, cough*)? Tell all!

I did a little bit of writing before work at the beginning of the month, but now I mostly write when I come home from work. So that covers what time of day I write during. I usually write at the dining room table or on a comfy couch. I don’t play music, but there is background noise called my family. (Love you guys!)

I, uh…guilty on the social media part. But I’m going on a hiatus for the rest of NaNo because my brain needs a break.I’ll still be replying to comments here though, don’t worrry! (As for using Insta/Messenger for communicating with friends…well…I’m starting to think I might cave a little on that)

And there it is! Now, onto having Connor & Kelly’s relationship subtly develop into friendship, muahahaha!

    1. I haven’t touched V2 in like two days, so I’m not sure that one will quite pan out. Buuuuuut…I’m also working on a new version of The Woodsman too…so maybe I’ll eventually add that word count to amp it up, I suppose. In the meantime: *screeches more*
