Well, it looks like I’m definitely caving on postponing the flash fics. Today’s fic features the characters of Zero and Five, the characters in Subjected, a flash fic I posted last August. In that one, they were about 15-16. This one features them as adults, maybe 23-24.
Some hints to their past might be dropped in here, and I’ll eventually expand on the story behind these two lovebirds and hey, maybe you’ll get to learn their real names someday. 😉
This is also being used as an idea for a modern-day Jorinde & Joringel retelling.
Character refs because I’m too lazy to describe them right now:
Miami, Florida, present day — Salt mixed with a soft breeze, shifting the fine particles under her bare feet. Water swished against the shore, adding to the sound of the seagulls above.
It was all far more soothing than the chaos of last night.
Barely making it out alive, being berated by their superiors, and then facing the possibility that the three of them would be sent to the wipe room upon returning.
She didn’t care. They had come for her, regardless of their training. More importantly, he had come for her.
The sand behind her shifted. Zero sat next to her a few seconds later and she snorted at the makeover the wind had given his hair.
“Ha ha, very funny,” he said. “You know, your hair doesn’t look that much better.”
“Oh, stop,” She nudged his shoulder. The teasing smile on her face faded when she saw the single red rose in his hand. She raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t.”
“I did.” He handed it to her. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Five.”
She took it with a smile and smelled it. “Thanks.”
They sat in silence until Zero blurted out, “I…got you something else too.” He dug into the right-hand pocket of his dark gray jacket and brought out a long black case.
“Zero…” she half-protested, but took it anyway. She opened it a crack and shut it immediately after. “Are you serious?”
“Well, I didn’t know if you would prefer roses or that, so I got you both,” he said as she opened the case again and took out the strand of pearls, noticing it to be a bracelet.
“It matches the necklace and earrings you already have.”
“I see that.” She fingered the pearls before placing them back into the case. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” He replied softly.
She turned back to the rose, sure her cheeks were turning red. After a while, she glanced at Zero. “What’re you thinking about?”
He remained silent for a bit before answering. “I keep thinking about that Bible we found. I don’t know why, but I…I think I’ve read it before.”
She chewed on her lower lip. Every day seemed to bring up something that sounded or looked familiar to them, yet they couldn’t ask questions because that would result in a wipe.
“Are you guys being sappy again?”
They turned to see Ten coming up behind them. “No,” they said in unison.
“You sure?” He gave them a wary look. “‘Cause if you are, I’m going to barf.” He stopped on Zero’s left. “We have to go. There’s still the mission to finish before we go ‘home.’”
“Yeah, I know,” Zero groaned as he got up and brushed sand off his clothes. “Shouldn’t have worn sneakers, now I’m going to have sand in ‘em.”
Five stood and grabbed her blue flip-flops. “Thanks for the gifts again, Zero.”
He winked and headed back to the van with Ten, who rolled his eyes. “You guys are ridiculous. It’s a surprise they haven’t found out yet.”
Five sighed and looked back to the sunset. Someday. Someday, even if they had to reach ninety first, she hoped they would be free.
